Our Company

A firm built on patience and plain speech

Teratai was started with a single conviction: that small business owners deserve a consulting experience built around their pace, their questions, and their particular situation.

Our Story

Where the name comes from, and what it means

Teratai is the Malay word for the lotus flower — a plant that grows in still water, rooted in mud, producing something orderly and considered from conditions that might look uncertain from the outside. It felt like the right name for a firm whose work happens mostly in quiet conversations.

The firm was founded in Petaling Jaya by a small group of practitioners who had spent years working in and alongside businesses in the Klang Valley. What they kept noticing was that the owners who struggled most weren't short of ideas or effort — they were short of structured thinking time. There was always a next task, a next problem, a next month. The plan stayed in someone's head and was never written down properly.

Teratai was built to address that specific gap. Not to be the largest consulting firm in Selangor, but to be a genuinely useful one — the kind of place where a business owner can come with a genuine problem and leave with something written, clear, and actionable.

Our engagements are deliberately small in number. We take on a limited number of clients at any one time so that our attention is not spread thin. This is not a limitation we apologise for — it is a structural choice that reflects our belief that quality advisory work requires real presence.

We are registered in Malaysia and our practice is grounded in the realities of doing business here: the regulatory environment, the common financing conditions, the cultural textures of running a small enterprise in a diverse market. We don't import frameworks from elsewhere and apply them without thought.

Our work is described by clients in similar terms: measured, clarifying, and frank. We take that as the right kind of reputation to have built.

Our Standards

How we hold ourselves accountable

Client Confidentiality

All client information is treated as strictly confidential. We do not discuss client matters externally. Mutual confidentiality agreements are available on request for longer engagements.

Written Deliverables

Every engagement produces a written output. We believe that a plan only exists when it is written clearly enough for someone else to read and understand without additional explanation.

SSM Registration

Teratai is a registered business under the Suruhanjaya Syarikat Malaysia. Our practice operates in compliance with Malaysian business law and professional conduct standards.

Honest Feedback

We do not tell clients what they want to hear. Our standard is to offer an accurate, respectful view of what we observe — including aspects of a plan that need more thought before proceeding.

Managed Caseload

We limit the number of active client engagements to maintain quality. When our capacity is full, we say so and offer to connect when space opens — rather than take on more than we can serve well.

Data Protection

Client data is stored securely and is not shared with third parties for commercial purposes. We observe the provisions of the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA Malaysia) in how we manage your information.

Our Practice

What makes our approach worth considering

Small business consulting in Malaysia covers a wide range of services, from accounting and tax advisory to marketing strategy and operational improvement. Teratai occupies a specific niche within that landscape: we focus on the thinking that happens before a business owner commits to a direction. That is not a common service, and we have spent time understanding why owners find it difficult to access.

Part of the answer is structural. Most consulting engagements are built around a deliverable — a financial model, a marketing plan, a process audit. These are valuable, but they assume that the client already knows what they want to address. Many owners we speak to are at a stage where they need to think clearly about their direction first, before any specific work can be scoped properly.

Our methodology draws on practices from document-based advisory traditions — where the written word is treated as a tool for thinking, not just recording. We ask questions, we listen to the answers, and we write. The output is not a framework applied from outside — it is a record of the owner's own thinking, organised and reflected back with care.

Owners who work well with Teratai tend to share a few qualities: they take their business seriously, they are willing to examine their assumptions, and they prefer substance to performance. If that sounds like you, we would be glad to have a conversation.
